Oxygen-rich blood returns from the lungs to the heart through the pulmonary veins. After gas exchange in the lungs, the blood is oxygenated and travels via these veins into the left atrium, then moves to the left ventricle to be pumped out to the body. This contrasts with the pulmonary arteries, which carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs; the aorta, which distributes oxygenated blood to the rest of the body; and the inferior vena cava, which brings deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the right atrium.
